It was back in 1674, that the name “Crown of delights” was coined for the palaces, villas, hunting lodges, fortresses and summer residencies that the House of Savoy was building around its capital at Turin; it was a strategic iron curtain as much as a ring of pleasure. The royal palaces and villas scattered in and around Torino are quite unique in their variety and quality, and it is astonishing that they were all built for such a relatively small state.
Just to name a few, we have Palazzo Reale with gardens designed by André Le Notre, Villa della Regina and Valentino Castle in town while outside Torino we have Castello di Rivoli presently seat to the Contemporary Art museum, Stupinigi hunting lodge, a masterpiece of European late Baroque architecture to the south and La Venaria Reale hunting palace to the north. In 1997, UNESCO made the “corona” a World Heritage Site for Humanity. You pick, I tour.
